10 Tips For Leaders On How To Reduce Stress
by Gustaf Risling

Everyday I hear people talk about the need to reduce stress. Everybody say it is important in order to get a more balanced life. But very few put action behind those words. One often mentioned reason is ''I have too much to do''. Another common explanation is ''I'll do that later''.

How about some easily grabbed ideas to get you out of your stress? Let me share with you ten tips that might change your life completely.

Tip no. 1: list on paper the five things in life meaning most to you. Then reflect on how much attention you give those things today and where you need to do more in order to be happy.

Tip no. 2: list on another paper the top five time consumers during a normal day in your life. Think about which of those you do because you are told to, and which you do because you really want to.

Tip no 3: of those things you are told to do, which do you really have to do and which could you actually stop doing? Then, when you tell the person who wants to give you such an assignment, you must be clear in your motivation, like: ''I am not the best person around for that'' or perhaps the most important one: ''I have not got the time needed because of other obligations''.

Tip no 4: use your calendar and book time for things you need to do, and, very important, things you want to do. Time blocking is a very efficient method of getting the right things done.

Tip no 5: it is always better to say ''no'' directly, than accepting a task and not deliver on time. You grow in respect if you keep your promises, and you feel much better!

Tip no 6: sometimes, regardless of your planning efficiency, things fall over your head. Take a short brake and meditate. If you do not know yet how to do that, read a book on how to do it, or attend a seminar. Meditation calms you down, and help you prioritize.

Tip no 7: make sure your desk is clean. Too many papers distract you. Just have those in front of you belonging to what you are doing that moment.

Tip no. 8: organize your PC files, mail box and directories in a way to easily find what you are looking for. Disorder on your hard drive is as devastating as disorder on your desk.

Tip no. 9: decide directly on incoming mails: I will act, I will not act, I will forward, I will archive etcetera. Your inbox should be empty when you leave your office for the day. Never keep read mails in your inbox. You lose control in a day or two.

Tip no 10: find somebody to be your mentor. Everyone needs an external person to discuss with. Your colleagues are not the best forum to find your mentor in.
