Top 5 Reasons Why Stress Could Be Harmful To Leaders
by Gustaf Risling

Many people today are talking about stress. Does it always lead to burnout? Wouldn't it be of high value to avoid harmful stress, and always stay on top? I have seen so many examples of people in busy environments that start to lose control. Let me share with you what could happen.

Interested? Just continue reading!

Reason no. 1: you stop paying attention to other important things in life, and you just focus on what is actually causing your stress. Whatever you focus on tends to become bigger. If it is your work that causes stress -- watch out. This means you perhaps neglect eating on regular times. It means you reduce time spent with family and friends. It means you stop exercising. It means you have less joy in life.

Reason no.2: you have so much to do that you do not know where to start. You get less done. Your inbox is constantly having an overflow of tasks. Your superiors will soon enough notice. If you have subordinates, they will notice almost before you do yourself. Not to mention your family.

Reason no 3: after a while you feel pity for yourself. Instead of acting upon the problem, you start complaining about the symptom, i.e. that you have too much to do. People will try to avoid you, because you are always in a bad mood and easily get irritated.

Reason no 4: if you are the leader of your team, you will be the role model. Either a good one, or a bad one. If your team members think you are bad, they will not look up to you as a leader. You will be reduced to ''the manager''. They might laugh behind your back. They will definitely talk.

Reason no.5: you will lose self confidence. If you do not believe in yourself, who will? Nobody shows you the respect you think you deserve, and eventually you will lose foothold completely.

Now, in order to avoid all of the above, you have to sit down and analyze your situation. If it is moving in the wrong direction, you have to decide what is needed to stop it and make a change to the better.
